Silence Speaks -Aton the Monk in Rural Tibet 2010

In 2010, amidst the rugged beauty of rural Tibet, I volunteered at a serene tea house in between leading expeditions in the Himalaya.

There, I encountered Aton—a lama whose silence spoke volumes.

Deaf and unable to utter words, he communicated through gestures and warm smiles.

Every day, our ritual unfolded: I served him fragrant green tea, and together, we explored the Tibetan phrase book.

Our fingers traced the characters, our eyes meeting in understanding. Aton’s curiosity bridged the gap between our worlds.

His kind demeanor left an indelible mark and shared laughter over mispronunciations.

As seasons changed, I wondered about Aton’s life beyond the cafe. Did he wander the hills, seeking hidden monasteries? Or did he find solace within those familiar walls?

Now, in 2024, I imagine Aton as a sage, sipping tea by the window. His eyes, crinkled with wisdom, gaze at distant peaks.

Aton, wherever you are, may contentment be your faithful companion.

May the winds carry whispers of our shared humanity across the vast Tibetan plateau. 🌿💙
